Seborrheic Keratosis (Senile Warts)

Before treatment at Inskin

Seborrheic Keratosis warts are a flat thick build up of epidermal cells with a rough texture and are also known as senile warts as are often associated with age.  They usually look like greasy or crusty spots which seem to be stuck on to the skin.  The colour varies but usually they are darkish brown or black and sometimes can be confused as to being moles. Though referred to as a wart, seborrheic warts are not caused by the HPV virus, they are viral within the skin but not contagious to other people.

Often the warts are circular although they can also be oval in shape, some have an irregular shape and their size can vary from around one centimetre to several centimetres in diameter.

Seborrheic warts tend first to appear around the age of 40. They can sometimes run in families. The actual cause of these warts is unknown. It can be common to develop several seborrheic warts as you become older.  Also, as time goes by, each wart tends to grow slightly and become darker. They can occur anywhere on your body, other than on your palms or soles.

The longer they are left untreated the more established they become, as they set down fibrous attachments into the skin. Many will grow small milia cysts within them (white).

Once removed, new fresh skin will emerge which may be a slightly brighter colour but this will even out in time. These are 1 of 3 blemishes which we recommend are treated sooner rather than later. The others being blood spots and age spots.

The treatment to remove them is by thermolysis cauterisation which is the most precise method of removal without damaging other areas of skin.   The wart is gently eased off the skin by cauterising the fibrous tissue that attaches them to the skin.  A scab will form and when fully healed the scab will drop off to reveal new clean skin underneath.  For fine small seborrheic keratosis we will use a desiccation technique (dehydrate via tiny probe) and these will slough off when ready.
