Electrolysis permanent hair removal
Permanent Hair Removal Electrolysis is a method of removing individual hairs from the face or body. It is the only treatment of hair removal considered to be and legally allowed to be described as permanent
Julie Johnson is our electrologist. She is a member of the British Institute and Association of Electrolysis and a member of the Bupa network of practitioners which means that we are able to accept people whose treatment is funded by the NHS, transgender clinics or insurance.
Medical electrolysis devices today destroy the growth centre of the hair with chemical or heat energy.
Electrolysis can treat most areas of the body including the eyebrows, face, abdomen, thighs, breasts, and legs.
What causes unwanted hair growth?
Hair growth is the result of heredity and hormone levels. Some drugs, temporary methods of hair removal, and illnesses can stimulate hair growth.
How many electrolysis treatments will I need?
Hair growth is influenced by many factors, and several or more electrolysis visits will be required. The total number of sessions needed to remove hair permanently from a particular area will vary from person to person. The treatment is progressive, most clients return once a week or every other week as needed. The unwanted hair will be gone forever once the series of treatments is complete. Each treatment lasts between 10 minutes and two hours.
Are there any side effects of treatment?
When permanent hair removal electrolysis is performed correctly by a skilled electrologist it is perfectly safe. On a first appointment, it is important for the salon/clinic to complete a full consultation checking all medical history for any reason why a treatment cannot be performed.
Following a treatment, the electrologist will go through the aftercare advice and apply a soothing aftercare gel, eg Aloe Vera and will provide the client with aftercare product to take home. It is important for the client to follow the advice to prevent any unwanted reaction.
Does electrolysis hurt?
Permanent Hair Removal Electrolysis can be a little uncomfortable for many people but others can fall asleep during treatment. During a permanent hair removal electrolysis a tiny sterile probe is introduced into the opening of the hair follicle. A small burst of energy is released at the base of the follicle and a sensation will be experienced like a tingle, heat or a minor sting. Everyone has their own individual pain threshold which can be affected by a number of factors:
1) Individual pain thresholds – this can be affected by health, stress, time of menstruation etc
2) Area to be treated
3) Strength and size of hair
4) Skin sensitivity
5) Type of current used
One thing that you can depend on is electrolysis works so any minor discomfort is well worth the results.
How hygienic is the treatment?
Sterile disposable probes are used to totally eliminate any risk of cross infection. For each client a brand new sterile probe is used and the individually packed sterile probe will be opened in front of you.
What actually happens in Permanent Hair Removal Electrolysis?
A very fine disposable sterile needle or probe, about the size of a small eyelash, is introduced into the individual hair follicle to the correct depth and a small amount of current is released. This eventually destroys the root of the hair by cutting off the blood supply which feeds the hair thus starving it of nourishment and nutrients. The
hair becomes finer with a slower growth rate until the eventual demise of the hair. The ability of the hair follicle to produce a hair is destroyed rather than the hair itself.
Blend Method (Thermocoagulation)
The ‘Blend’ method is a combination of Short wave diathermy and Galvanic current blended together in one treatment.
This short wave diathermy produces a heat, and the galvanic produces a chemical reaction, which is the result of water, salts and a low current mixing at the root of the hair. The chemical produced is caustic in effect and erodes the living cells and blood supply at the root of the hair, thus destroying it. On its own, this chemical can take up to 20 seconds to treat one hair; this is the main reason why galvanic epilation is not used in isolation. By introducing the heat the chemical is actually warmed. The higher temperature of the chemical reaction shortens the treatment time to approx 5 secs per hair and increases effects on destroying the hair – the perfect answer.
In addition to this, Blend epilation seems to be more successful on sensitive skins and stronger hair than either method in isolation. Inskin offer Short Wave diathermy and Blend epilation. The initial consultation will decide which is suitable for each individual client and discuss the treatment frequency and duration required. We will also explain the structure of the hair and how the treatment is given.
Short Wave Diathermy (Thermolysis)
Diathermy epilation is the permanent removal of unwanted hair using a short-wave diathermy current. This current creates heat, which is delivered to the hair at the root. The heat dries up all the moisture, living cells and blood supply at the root of the hair, thus destroying it.
Each hair grows in a structure known as a hair follicle. The root of the hair sits at the base of this follicle. To target the heat created by the treatment at the root of the hair, a minute probe or needle is inserted into the follicle. Once it is in place, the current is activated for 1 or 2 seconds. This method works successfully when the individual hair is in the anagen stage of the hair cycle (actively growing)
Permanent Hair Removal Electrolysis requires a skilled therapist who can deliver an accurate, smooth insertion into the follicle. These skills are necessary to obtain maximum effect and to reduce the hair growth whilst minimising skin trauma. The initial consultation will involve assessing the skin condition and the hair growth that is concerning you. The treatment plan will be identified for the client’s individual needs. It is important that a client has confidence in the therapist and the hygiene procedures. PLEASE ENSURE THERE IS A MINIMUM 3MM GROWTH OF HAIR SO THAT A TEST PATCH CAN TAKE PLACE.
