Acne, also known as acne vulgaris, is a long-term skin disease that occurs when hair follicles are clogged with dead skin cells and oil from the skin. It is characterized by blackheads or whiteheads, pimples, oily skin, and possible scarring.

There are a number of factors that can cause acne such as
  • Age: Teenagers and young adults are commonly affected although it can also occur in adults
  • Excess sebum or oil production
  • Accumulation of dead skin cells
  • Bacterial infection of the follicle
  • Changes in hormonal levels as noted during puberty or pregnancy
  • Certain medications such as corticosteroids and lithium
  • Diet: Foods with high sugar content, dairy products , etc may trigger/worsen acne
  • Stress
  • Family history
  • Skin contact with greasy or oily substances
  • Friction or pressure on the skin

In some cases creams and GP subscriptions to treat acne can be too much for the skin and alternative more natural ways to treat the skin could be a better option.
