Mole Treatment/Removal
Mole Treatment
Moles “nevi” are small, dark, raised spots on the skin that are caused by the clustering of pigmented cells known as melanocytes. These can also be non-pigmented.
Mole treatment for cosmetic purposes is very popular. The treatment at Inskin gives a more aesthetically pleasing look to the mole, visibly reduces the size and flattens them without leaving any scarring. If the mole is a flesh coloured mole, it will in effect become invisible.

Causes of Moles
The causes of moles are not fully understood, but there are several factors that can contribute to their development. These include:
- Genetic Factors – Moles can typically be seen in generations of families and parents and offspring can commonly have similar placings of moles
- Sun Exposure – Exposure to UV radiation from the sun or tanning beds can lead to the formation of moles, particularly in people with fair skin. Sunburns, particularly during childhood, can also increase the risk of developing moles and skin cancer later in life. It is therefore extremely important to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays by wearing protective clothing, using sunscreen, and avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun during peak hours.
- Hormonal Changes – Hormonal changes, such as those that occur during puberty or pregnancy, can cause an increase in the number and size of moles on the skin.
Different Types of Moles
While most moles are harmless, it’s important to be able to identify different types of moles in order to determine if they are potentially harmful. There are three main types of moles:
Common Moles
Common moles are small, dark, and round or oval in shape. They are usually less than a quarter of an inch in diameter and have a well-defined edge. These moles can appear anywhere on your body and are usually harmless. However, it’s important to keep an eye on them and check for any changes in colour, shape, or size. If you notice any changes, it’s recommended that you have this checked by a dermatologist. We have the facility to aid you with that with our mole and skin cancer screening. Common moles are caused by an overgrowth of pigment cells in the skin. They can develop at any age, but tend to appear during childhood or adolescence.
Atypical Moles (Dysplastic Nevi)
Atypical moles can look very similar to melanoma and are often irregularly shaped, with multiple colours and an uneven border. They are typically larger than common moles, measuring more than a quarter of an inch in diameter. Atypical moles can appear anywhere on the body, but are more commonly found on the back, chest, and scalp.
People with atypical moles are at a higher risk of developing melanoma. It is important to monitor atypical moles closely and have them checked regularly by a dermatologist, we can also provide a mole mapping service. If any changes are noticed, such as growth or changes in colour, it’s important to seek medical attention immediately.
Congenital Moles
Congenital moles are present at birth and are larger than common moles. They can be a variety of colours and shapes, and may have hair growing out of them. Large congenital moles have a higher risk of developing into melanoma, so it’s important to monitor them closely.
Congenital moles are caused by an overgrowth of pigment cells in the skin that occur during fetal development. The risk of developing melanoma from a congenital mole depends on the size of the mole. If the mole is larger than a fist, the risk is higher. It’s important to have large congenital moles checked regularly by a dermatologist or have a mole mapping service with us.
In conclusion, identifying different types of moles is important in determining if they are potentially harmful. Common moles are usually harmless, while atypical and congenital moles have a higher risk of developing into melanoma. It’s important to monitor all moles closely and seek medical attention if any changes are noticed.
Most moles appear in early childhood and during the first 30 years of a person’s life. It is normal to have between 10-40 moles by adulthood. As the years pass, moles usually change slowly, becoming raised and/or changing colour.
Treatment
We can effectively treat moles that you feel are unsightly. Raised moles will be flattened, diminished in size and of a more aesthetically pleasing appearance after treatment. We work with advanced procedures with diathermy also known as electrocauterization or thermolysis. This is an extremely precise and effective treatment with minimal downtime. Scabbing will occur which can last 1-2 weeks.
In some instances, people want their moles to just be smaller but not completely diminished which we can also do.
Hairs in moles are also unsightly, we can treat those to stop the hair growth permanently. Please note however, that the treatment may well diminish the size or aspects of the size of the mole, so if this is a mole you prefer to be seen (think Cindy Crawford), then you may well decide not to have hairs in moles treated.
NB: We would ensure a thorough examination of moles before proceeding. We invite you to book a full consultation prior to treatment. With any mole treatment, we ask that you check with your doctor or equivalent to confirm that the mole in question is of no medical concern. We can also provide mole screening at the clinic. If necessary, we can provide a letter for you to take to your doctor so they can confirm the mole in question is of no medical concern. We can also accept proof of this via your NHS app. We can then treat the mole on the day of your consultation if desired if you have the above information.
We do not cut out the mole, this is invasive and will leave a scar. It is not necessary to cut out moles unless the mole in question is of medical concern. We treat the mole for aesthetic purposes only. Pigmented moles may not lose colour completely it depends on how deep the pigment is within the skin but invariably these will be of a lighter colour
Large pigmented mole reduced down, slight amount of pigment remaining which can also be treated at review time
