Microsclerotherapy Leg Spider Vein Removal

Microsclerotherapy  is used to remove thread veins, also known as spider veins on the legs.

Microsclerotherapy – Spider Vein & Thread Vein Removal involves giving a series of tiny injections on the surface of the thread veins using a fine needle, making this a generally painless procedure. The sclerosing drug used irritates the lining of the veins causing the walls to stick together where blood is then directed back into the deeper veins.

This is a safe procedure and any serious side effects are rare. Microsclerotherapy treatment may initially make the thread veins appear to look worse before they fade or disappear and may take up to 4 weeks for the full effect of the treatment to work. Some people may need more than one treatment before the veins fade or disappear completely, depending on the individual and how many thread veins are present however once thread veins are faded or gone, these should not return.

Common side effects include hives initially following injections, redness, swelling, lumps, bumps, tenderness, itching, irritation of the skin. Bruising is also common, these side effects should be gone within 2-4 weeks. On rare occasion a darker pigmentation may occur around some of the treated area. Severe allergic reactions are rare.

You are not suitable for the treatment if any of the following applies: pregnancy/breastfeeding, history of deep vein thrombosis, phlebitis or infection of the legs, uncontrolled or severe asthma or diabetes.

During treatment, the affected veins are injected with a sclerosing agent. (The choice of the chemical sclerosing agent and its physical form depend on the size of the vessel to be treated). This causes the vein walls to become sticky and blood is no longer able to pass through. When no blood is passing through, the capillaries collapse and are absorbed by the body, therefore gradually disappearing from view.

One session of Sclerotherapy  will treat roughly the size of 2 hands depending on the network and density of the veins.

For optimum results, compression stockings/tights are worn for one to three weeks after treatment (easily found in chemists). We recommend bringing these with you for after the treatment. Full aftercare details will be given at the time of treatment/consultation.

A difference can be seen with just one session, more sessions may be required depending on the number of veins to be treated.

NB, varicose and thick leg veins cannot be treated with this method.
